Ships_in_WA_portAn increase in piracy incidents off the coast of West Africa has been blamed on pirates targeting oil-product cargoes

At least eight incidents were reported during February, with the growing number of piracy attacks forming part of a growing trend, according to maritime risk company AKE Group.

In its latest monthly piracy report, AKE has warned that pirate tactics are becoming even more violent in the region.

AKE maritime specialist Rory Lamrock said the number of attacks was likely to rise in the coming months with incidents taking place further out to sea.

“Attacks are expected to increase in frequency off Nigeria and Benin in particular,” said Lamrock.

“Incidents should also be anticipated as far as 120 nautical miles from the Nigerian coast.

“Reports suggest criminals may be hijacking local fishing vessels to launch attacks further out to sea, where naval or coast guard capacity is particularly weak,” he added.

Two crewmembers were killed and three abducted and held onshore over the course of February.
