The company said that wireline logs and formation sampling indicated a potential pay zone of between 60 metres and 100 metres in the prospect located in Block 13T. Africa Oil holds a 50 per cent working interest in this block, with the remaining stake held by Tullow Oil Kenya.

The company also said that the Agete-1 well in the same oil block, which was spudded in early September 2013, has been estimated to have 276mn barrels of recoverable oil. The Bahasi-1 well in the Block 9 Bahasi prospect is likely to spud in the coming days, Africa Oil added. This prospect has been estimated to have 320mn barrels of recoverable oil.

The Tutule-1 well in the South Omo Block in Ethiopia will test the Tertiary rift play in a block four kilometres east of the recently drilled Sabisa-1 well. Africa Oil’s partners in the South Omo block are Tullow Oil, with a 50 per cent working interest, and Marathon Ethiopia, with a 20 per cent working interest.

Africa Oil CEO Keith Hill said, "With 10 additional leads and prospects in this basin, we can expect additional discoveries in the immediate future. This discovery gives us further incentive to aggressively push forward plans for development studies of this project in conjunction with our partners and the government of Kenya."

Africa Oil said that two additional lightweight rigs for testing and shallow drilling operations are being mobilised into northern Kenya and are expected to be operational in Q4 2013.
