The two blocks, SL-08A and SL-08B, have been combined into one concession and are located between 120km and 180km southwest of the capital of Freetown, covering a combined area of about 5,500 sq km. The new blocks have average water depths ranging from approximately 1,500 metres to 3,000 metres.

George Kirkland, vice-chairman of Chevron, said, “We are very pleased to have the opportunity to participate in Sierra Leone’s deepwater exploration efforts. We have a strong presence in the region, and this new play will capitalise on our global deepwater experience and exploration capabilities.”

The company will be operator of the two blocks with 55 per cent interest, alongside Noble Energy and Odye, who will hold 30 per cent and 15 per cent respectively.

Chevron president of Africa and Latin America exploration and production, Ali Moshiri, said, “We have a strong regional interest in the geology and we look forward to applying our technical expertise to this emerging trend.”
