(Image source: QR9iudjz0/sxc.hu)Cobalt International Energy has announced that it has made oil and gas discoveries at its Lontra #1 and Mavinga #1 exploratory wells offshore Angola

The Lontra #1 deepwater pre-salt well, located on Block 20, reached total depth, with the drilling and evaluation results confirming the presence of oil and gas, the US-based oil and gas explorer said.

Further evaluation, including a drill stem test, would be required to assess the well’s potential, the explorer added.

Upon completion of testing operations, Cobalt International Energy plans to mobilise the Petroserv SSV Catarina drilling rig to the Orca #1 pre-salt exploratory well, located approximately 25km northeast Block 20. Cobalt International Energy’s partners in the block include Sonangol and BP Exploration Angola (Kwanza Benguela) Limited.

Similarly, the Mavinga #1 pre-salt oil discovery was made on Block 21, located around 12.5km northwest of Cobalt’s 2012 Cameia discovery. The well reached total depth and encountered approximately 30 metres of net oil pay.

Company sources estimate a gross oil column of up to 200 metres at the crest of the Mavinga structure updip of the Mavinga #1 well. Additional drilling would be required to confirm the ultimate gross thickness of the mound and its reservoir quality, sources added.

Joseph H Bryant, chairman of Cobalt International Energy, said, “This is a remarkable and highly unusual start to the exploration of such an immense new basin.

“Our early success in exploring the pre-salt offshore Angola and Gabon, coupled with our success to date in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico, are a testament to the depth of our portfolio.”
