(Image source: Magharebia/Flickr)Amec Foster Wheeler (AFW) has announced winning a contract from Sonatrach to supply engineering services for the de-bottlenecking of the Hassi R’Mel gas field

The UK-based project management company has not announced the value of the consultancy contract.

Algerian government-owned Sonatrach is one of the largest oil and gas companies in Africa. The contract it has awarded to AFW is meant to ensure that the Hassi R’Mel gas field can be operated well into the future. Hassi R’Mel is one of the largest gas fields in the world and is located approximately 550 km south of Algiers.

The engineering design services involve a major flow assurance exercise using AFW’s proprietary software to identify future bottlenecks in the gas field gathering network. In addition, AFW’s team will undertake detailed pipeline design, compression studies and the multi-disciplined specification of the additional infrastructure required to allow continued production.

Roberto Penno, group president for Asia, Middle East, Africa and Southern Europe at Amec Foster Wheeler, said, “We are delighted to be working with Sonatrach again on this major development using our considerable upstream and pipelines expertise, and hope to further build the relationship by supporting them with their future plans in the region.”

The specialist consultancy work from AFW will enable Algeria to remain a major exporter of gas.
